Saigo ni Warau Monoga Katsu

(The one who laughs last, laughs best )

A long time ago in a land far, far away there lived a farmer and his family. Each and everyday he and his son would work in their feild together to provide food for his family.
The previous season was good for the farmer and his family and this year they were to harvest even more fruit and vegatables. But just before the harvest time a terrible storm blew in from nowhere and distroyed all the crops and orchids. The morning after the wife was so upset that she took the daughter and went to live with a more fortunate farmer. All the other framers, suprisingly, weren't hit by the storm.
They all laughted and made fun of him and his sonand their misfortune. They were very, very sad. However, the father told his son "The one who laughs last, laughs best".
A few weeks later people still laughted and they hadn't heard from his wife. They continued to work in the feilds and collected what little food they could find. The rain from the storm had washed a small chunk of dirt away from the side of a small hill. They looked about this small hole that had been created and found it was an entrance to a gold mine. They were very happy. They mined all the gold but didn't tell any of the neighbouring farmers. When the mine was empty they took the gold to town and sold it and became very rich indeed. They built a bigger house with many servants and never had to work on the farm again. The son had grown up very well and was deciding who to marry. He had to chose from many of his girlfriends. The father said, "You should wed all of them."
In those times it was okay to have many wives so he did, all 20 of them and because they had a lot of money the father built them their houses.
The father was old and sick and he was about to die. He called for his son.
"Son" he said, "remember when people laughed at us and I told you that saying?"
The son nodded his head. The father pointed out the window and the son saw the other farmers, old and sick but still working in the feilds. They began to laugh and remembered all the good times they had together.
The father died happy. The son understood the saying and lived happily ever after. He told all his many, many children the story and word got round about the man who laughed last , laughed the best.
I believe this saying to be true. Even if you have trouble in the beginning, try hard and in the end things will get better.
